Where it comes from

The story of Sayler

Medieval England named people for what they did, and one of the jobs was entertaining — the sailleor was a tumbler or dancer, and families carried the name long after the trade was forgotten. German-speaking settlers in colonial Pennsylvania brought Seiler, the rope-maker's name, and English neighbors wrote it Sayler. Both lines are in American records. The modern given name draws chiefly on the sound of sailor, which is a third thing again.

Meaningscholars disagree

dancer, or rope-maker

The English surname Sayler is generally traced to a Middle English word for a leaper or dancer. A second and equally strong line is German: Seiler, a rope-maker, anglicized as Sayler and Siler by families in Pennsylvania. The connection to the word sailor is a modern reinterpretation.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
  • Two documented surname histories, English and German, stand behind it.
  • It works for a girl or a boy, which is useful before a birth.
What to consider
  • Saylor and Sailor are both more written, so the spelling will be asked for.
  • The nautical reading is the one everyone will assume, and it is not the older one.
  • It reads as a surname to people meeting it in front of another one.
