The story of Savino
The Sabines were absorbed into Rome early, and their name survived in Latin as an adjective and then as a personal name, carried by several saints including a bishop of Canosa and a martyr of Spoleto. Italian took it as Savino, with the Latin b softening to v as it regularly does between vowels in Italian, the same change that turns habere into avere. The name is strongest in Puglia and the south, where the cult of San Savino is concentrated. It reached the United States with the Italian migration and had its best American year in 1929, with the American-born generation of those families.
Meaning
a Sabine, one of the Sabine people
Latin Sabinus, an inhabitant of Sabinum, the hill country north-east of Rome. Roman naming used ethnic adjectives freely as cognomina, which is why Latin gives Sabinus, Afer for an African, Gallus for a Gaul and Syrus for a Syrian. The people's own name is older than Latin and its sense is not recovered.
