The story of Saulo
Saul is the first king of Israel, chosen for his height, and the account of his reign is a study in a man coming apart. Separately, Saul of Tarsus becomes Paul in Acts — the same person under two names, and the text does not explain the change. Spanish and Portuguese give Saulo, and it is used in Brazil and across Latin America, reaching American records from there.
Meaning
asked for, prayed for
From Hebrew sha'al, to ask or request; the first book of Samuel plays on the word repeatedly, since the people ask for a king and are warned at length about what they are asking for.

The Harvin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Saulo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Harvin climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Harvin's path sketches the road Saulo is walking now.
Saulo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Saulo is headed
Saulo should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that the biblical text plays on deliberately.
- Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- The first vowel is a diphthong English readers will get wrong.
- Saúl with an accent is the more common Spanish form.
- The biblical Saul's story ends badly, which is well enough known to follow the name.
