Behind Saroya stands one of the oldest names people have given each other: Arabic Thurayya, the Pleiades, that small huddle of stars visible on a clear winter night. Through Persian it became Soraya, and through Spanish and Portuguese it traveled west; Saroya is that name with two letters turned around. The sound stays soft in the mouth either way — three syllables that open and close on a vowel.

Where it comes from

The story of Saroya

Thurayya is the Arabic name for the Pleiades, and it has been a woman's name in Arabic since the early Islamic centuries, carried into Persian as Soraya and into Turkish as Süreyya. Persian and Andalusian poetry kept the star image alive, and Muslim Spain passed Soraya into Spanish and Portuguese, where it is still a normal name today. In the 1950s Soraya, Queen of Iran, put the name into Western newspapers and magazines on a scale it had never had before, and American records begin to show scattered variant spellings not long after. Saroya is one of them — the same name with the r and the first vowel exchanged, a small shuffle of the kind that happens whenever a name crosses into a language that has not heard it before.

Usually read as a form of Soraya — the Pleiades star cluster

The mainstream reading takes Saroya as a respelling of Soraya, from Arabic Thurayya, the name of the Pleiades and a diminutive tied to the root for abundance. But Saroya's own letter order is not documented as a word in any language, so some families treat it as its own spelling rather than a variant, and it sits close in sound to Sara and to the Armenian surname Saroyan. The star reading is the strongest; it is not the only one in circulation.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rides on a name people already half-know: Soraya is familiar in Spanish, Portuguese, Persian, Arabic and Turkish-speaking communities.
  • A documented history stretching back centuries in Arabic and Persian, rather than a spelling invented last decade.
  • Three syllables ending in -a, the same shape as Maya, Amaya and Amelia, so it fits easily into English rhythm.
  • Several natural short forms — Sari, Roya, Saro — including one that works as a full name elsewhere.
What to consider
  • It will be corrected to Soraya, which is the older and more widespread spelling. Expect to spell it out often, and to see the letters swapped back on forms, class lists and coffee cups.
  • Two pronunciations circulate — suh-ROY-uh and sah-ROH-yah — so she will introduce herself with a small correction fairly often.
  • Almost everyone carrying this exact spelling in the US is a young child, so there is no established grown-up Saroya nearby to make it familiar to teachers and neighbors. That settles quickly once people have met one.
