This is a third story on a Greek word. The word meant a messenger; Latin and then English made a woman's name out of it; and then an American ending was attached to that name, which puts two layers of construction between the child and anything anybody ever meant by the word.

Where it comes from

The story of Angelene

The elaborate hierarchy of angels that everyone half-knows was invented by somebody pretending to be somebody else. A writer of about the fifth or sixth century produced a set of treatises signed with the name of a man converted by Paul in Athens, five hundred years earlier, and in them laid out nine orders of angels in three ranks — seraphim, cherubim, thrones and the rest. The forgery was accepted as apostolic authority for a thousand years and the scheme became standard across western Christianity. Renaissance scholars worked out that the texts were far too late. The nine orders stayed.

The Greek stem is unambiguous and entirely occupational. Neither the Latin feminine ending nor the American one that follows it contributes any sense of its own.

Angelene sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 52 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Angelene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is warm and needs no etymology to explain.
  • Angie and Angel both sit inside it as complete short forms.
  • It is rarer than its relatives while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Angeline and Angelina are both commoner and get substituted.
  • The stress placement is unsettled between the front and the back.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
