The story of Sarita
Sarah is the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac, and her name has been in continuous Jewish use for three thousand years; Christianity and Islam both carry it. Spanish naming took it up and applied its ordinary diminutive machinery, which is unusually productive: almost any Spanish name can take -ita or -ito, and the result is affectionate rather than diminishing. Sarita became a name in its own right in Spain and Latin America, and reached American records with Spanish-speaking families. There is also an unrelated Sanskrit sarita, meaning a river, which is a separate name used in India.
Meaning
princess, noblewoman
Hebrew sarah means a princess or a woman of rank, from a root about ruling — the same root gives sar, a prince or official. In Genesis the name is changed from Sarai to Sarah at the moment God promises she will be the mother of nations, and the text treats the change as significant. The -ita ending is Spanish and affectionate, and it adds no meaning. The derivation is settled.

The Marilou test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sarita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marilou climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marilou's path sketches the road Sarita is walking now.
