Compound names have come back three times in the American records, and each time for a different reason. The 1880s fused them out of speech, the 1940s out of Mary's dominance, and the 1980s did it deliberately.

The story of Sarahann
The first wave was a speech habit written down: nineteenth-century families used two-part calling names constantly and the space between them eventually disappeared. The second was pressure: with Mary holding a fifth of the girls' list, a second element was needed to tell cousins apart, and Mary Ann, Mary Lou and Mary Beth arrived in numbers. The third, in the 1980s and 1990s, is different again, because by then no single name dominated and nobody needed a compound for clarity; it was chosen for the sound and often for the deliberate old-fashionedness of it. Sarahann, Sarajane and Annalise belong to that revival, which is why the fused spelling appears so late for a form that looks Victorian.

Sarahann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dalinda climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dalinda's path sketches the road Sarahann is walking now.
