The story of Sammie
Samuel is the prophet who anoints the first two kings of Israel, and the name reached English through the Reformation, becoming a Puritan and then a general favorite. American families registered its pet forms as legal names from the nineteenth century, and the -ie ending was the preference of the period — applied to Willie, Jimmie, Eddie and Sammie alike. Masculine Sammie peaked around 1930.

God has heard
From the Hebrew Shemu'el, usually read as shama, 'he heard', plus el, 'God'. The Book of Samuel gives a different explanation in Hannah's mouth, connecting the name to sha'al, 'to ask', because she asked for him — which fits Saul's name better than Samuel's. Both readings are in the text.
