Where it comes from

The story of Sallye

Sally is also an English word with a military history. A sally is a sudden rush out of a besieged place by the defenders, and a sally port is the small door they came out of — the term is still used for the secure entrance of a prison or a warship. It comes from a French verb meaning to leap, by way of Latin, and it has nothing at all to do with the name. The two have simply been sitting on top of each other in English for four hundred years, which is why sally forth means to set out boldly and why nobody thinks of a woman when they read it.

Meaning

princess, through Sarah

Sarah is Hebrew and the reading is not in doubt. What happened afterwards is stranger. Medieval and early modern English pet forms regularly replaced the r of a name with an l — Sarah gave Sally, Mary gave Molly, Dorothy gave Dolly — and nobody has produced a convincing explanation. The usual suggestion is that children found the l easier and adults copied them. The habit stopped: no name coined in the last two hundred years has been treated this way, and the handful of survivors are all we have.

How the name formed

  1. Hebrew Sarah, meaning princess
  2. English pet forms swap an r for an l
  3. Sally becomes a name in its own right
  4. a separate French word gives English the sally port
  5. Sallye appears in American records in the 1880s

Sallye sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1942, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sallye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm, plain and completely readable, and it has been in use for four hundred years.
  • Sarah stands behind it as a formal option and Sal in front of it as a blunt one.
  • The spelling is genuinely uncommon while the name is entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • The final letter will be dropped by everyone who writes it down.
  • It reads as a pet form, so people will look for a Sarah on the certificate.
  • In Britain the word has a slang life of its own that Americans do not hear.
