Where it comes from

The story of Sallyann

The nickname stuck because of what the organization did in the wars. Salvation Army workers followed troops to the front with mobile canteens, ran hostels for men on leave, and made a policy of charging nothing and preaching only if asked — which was rarer among wartime charities than it sounds. Soldiers called it the Sally Ann, and in Canada the name is still in ordinary use for the charity shops. It is one of very few institutional nicknames that were coined by the people being helped rather than by the institution.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is two names joined: Sally, which is Sarah with a consonant swapped, and Ann, which is a Hebrew word about favor. Neither meaning survives the joining. What the compound records is a habit — American and British families used pairs of short names as units for most of a century, and the pairs were written with a space, a hyphen or nothing at all depending on who was filling in the form.

How the name formed

  1. Sarah gives Sally by a consonant swap in English speech
  2. Ann established as one of the commonest English names
  3. American families join pairs of short names
  4. an army charity acquires the pair as a nickname
  5. Sallyann appears in the record in the 1920s
