The story of Sadi
Saadi of Shiraz spent about thirty years traveling — as far as India by his own account, and into captivity at one point — and then came home and wrote two books that Persian speakers have been quoting ever since. The lines about one body are from the Gulistan, and they are on a carpet at the United Nations and were quoted by an American president. His name traveled too, in an unlikely direction: a French officer who admired Persian poetry named his son after him, and that son, Sadi Carnot, worked out in 1824 why a heat engine cannot be perfectly efficient, which is the foundation of thermodynamics. A Persian poet and the second law of thermodynamics are connected by one name.

fortunate, happy
As a Persian and Turkish man's name, Sadi is from Arabic saad, good fortune, giving something like the fortunate one. As an American woman's name it is a spelling of Sadie, a pet form of Sarah. The two have nothing to do with each other and share four letters.

The Dannah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sadi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dannah climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dannah's path sketches the road Sadi is walking now.
Sadi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a real man's name in Persian and Turkish and a real woman's clip in English.
- Four letters and two syllables, with nothing hard in either.
- Sarah is available behind it as a formal version for families using the English road.
- Sadie is far commoner and this will be read as a misspelling of it.
- In Persian and Turkish it is a man's name, which matters on any international form.
- The few boys given this spelling in America will be read as girls on paper.
