Our story of Sachiko
Japan keeps a koseki, a household register, rather than a register of individuals. Every birth, marriage, divorce, adoption and death is entered against a household headed by one person, and when a woman marries she is ordinarily removed from her parents' register and entered on her husband's — which is bound up with the legal requirement that a married couple share one surname. The register is held at the municipality where the family is registered, which need not be anywhere anyone lives, and copies of it are required for passports, inheritance and a great many ordinary transactions. It follows a family across generations and has historically made certain things very visible: illegitimacy, adoption, and the regional origins of families whose ancestors were subject to caste discrimination.

The sound sachi is usually written with a character meaning happiness or good fortune, and read that way the name is straightforward. Other characters share the sound, and the romanised form cannot say which a particular family used.

Three syllables, all short and even. Japanese does not stress syllables the way English does, so an English speaker will add one; putting it lightly on the second is closest.

Fashion outlook
Sachiko sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Every syllable is open, so English speakers manage it on a first attempt.
- Sachi works as a short form and is a real name in Japanese on its own.
- The spelling is unambiguous and cannot realistically be misspelled.
- The ending places the name in a specific generation and is now rare in Japan.
- The romanisation throws away the character, which is where the meaning lives.
- Sachi, Sachie and Sachiyo will all be confused with it in speech.
