Saadia Gaon translated the Hebrew Bible into Arabic in the tenth century, wrote the first systematic Jewish philosophy, and compiled the first Hebrew dictionary — and did most of it in Baghdad while conducting a long and public quarrel with the head of the Jewish community there. The name is Arabic and means happiness, which is not obviously what his life was about.

Where it comes from

The story of Saadia

Arabic was the working language of Jewish scholarship across the medieval Islamic world, and Jewish scholars took Arabic names as a matter of course — Saadia is the Arabic sa'adiya, and the great tenth-century scholar who carries it is the reason the name is remembered in both traditions. It is used across the Arabic-speaking world today and among South Asian Muslim families. American records carry it from 1954 in very small numbers, which places it among the Arabic names that arrived through migration rather than through the deliberate adoptions of the 1960s.

Meaning

happiness, good fortune

From the Arabic sa'ada, happiness or felicity, from a root about being fortunate. The same root gives Saeed and Saida, and it is one of the most productive in Arabic naming. The name is used by Muslim and Jewish families alike, which is worth saying because the two traditions shared a great deal of vocabulary.

Four syllables, stress on the second. The doubled a in the spelling marks a long vowel with a catch between the two parts, which English speakers usually smooth into a single long ah.

Saadia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1964, with 21 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Saadia went to 6 girls in 2025, but Sadiya, Sadia and Saadiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 115, which makes it the 845th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,363 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,976 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Saadia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is one word long and entirely positive.
  • It is shared between Muslim and Jewish naming traditions, which few names are.
  • It has a genuinely major scholar standing behind it.
  • Four open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
What to consider
  • Sadia, Saadiya and Sa'dia all appear in English writing, so the spelling has to be given.
  • The doubled a is regularly collapsed by English speakers, which shortens the name.
  • Outside Muslim and Jewish communities the name needs a short introduction.
