Saachi
Feminine · “Sanskrit "power”
The doubled a in Saachi comes from a transliteration scheme invented for computers. Before Indian scripts could be typed easily, Indians writing in the Latin alphabet developed conventions for marking long vowels with doubled letters — and those conventions have moved from email onto birth certificates.

The story of Saachi
Indian languages have far more vowel distinctions than the Latin alphabet provides, and the workarounds are well established. Scholarly systems use diacritics — ā, ī, ś — which are hard to type. In their place, informal schemes developed from the 1980s onward among Indians using computers: aa for long a, ee for long i, sh and s for the two different s sounds. These were designed for transliterating text, not for names, but they became the ordinary way of writing Indian words in the Latin alphabet, and families now use them when registering names abroad. Saachi is one result: the doubled a is a length mark taken from a keyboard convention. The American figures peak in 2013.

Sanskrit "power, ability"; also read as Hindi "truth"
Two readings are live. Sanskrit śacī means power, help or eloquence, and is the name of Indra's consort, who is generally called Shachi or Indrani. Separately, sach in Hindi and Punjabi means truth, from Sanskrit satya, and Sachi is read that way by many families. The doubled a marks a long vowel and is a transliteration device, not part of any Indian script.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Zoraya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Saachi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Zoraya climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Zoraya's path sketches the road Saachi is walking now.
Saachi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling preserves a vowel length that plain Sachi loses.
- It is short, two syllables, and read correctly by English speakers.
- It has settled meanings in both Sanskrit and modern Hindi.
- The doubled a is read as a typo by people unfamiliar with the convention.
- Sachi and Saachi compete, and documents may disagree.
- The two possible meanings come from genuinely different words.
