Where it comes from

Our story of Rylinn

Riley is the most successful genuinely unisex name in modern American records, and Rylinn is one of its children. Riley entered the top hundred for boys in the 1990s and for girls a few years later, and unlike most crossover names it held both — which is rare, since a name that crosses usually loses the sex it came from. What that gave the naming system was an opening everyone knew and no strong sex signal attached to it, which made it ideal raw material for feminine formations: Rylee, Ryleigh, Rylan, Rylin, Rylinn, Rylie. Adding -linn settles the ambiguity that Riley itself keeps open. The 2010 peak sits at the height of that family's run.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. The Ry- opening comes from Riley, from Irish Ó Raghallaigh, whose own personal name Raghallach has no settled meaning; an English place name from rye clearing is a separate source of the same surname. The -linn ending is an American suffix from Lynn. Neither element's sense transfers to Rylinn, which is not recorded outside American use.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rylinn went to 23 girls in 2025, but Rylynn, Rilynn and Rylin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 383, which makes it the 605th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,805 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,197 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Rylinn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
