Amisha
Feminine
In a traditional Hindu naming, the first syllable is not chosen by the parents. An astrologer works out the moon's position at the moment of birth, that fixes a lunar mansion, and the mansion assigns a sound. The child's name has to start with it. The moment of birth is written into the first letter.

Origin, sound and short forms
The story of Amisha
The system is called nakshatra naming, and the twenty-seven lunar mansions between them cover a set of syllables, so a family consulting an astrologer is handed a sound and then chooses a name that begins with it. The practice is still followed widely and it explains something about Indian naming that outsiders find odd: two siblings may have names that seem unrelated in meaning but are linked to the moments they arrived. Transliteration adds its own difficulty afterwards. Sanskrit distinguishes three sounds that English writes with s and sh, and English has only two, so a name can come into American records with either letter and neither is a mistake.

Not established
Amisha is given in India and glossed variously as beautiful, honest or without deceit, but the readings offered do not agree and none is well sourced. The a- at the front is the Sanskrit negative prefix, the same one behind ahimsa, non-violence, and it is cousin to the Greek a- in atheist and anonymous.

The Rex test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amisha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rex climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rex's path sketches the road Amisha is walking now.
Amisha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three open syllables that are easy in English, Hindi and Spanish alike.
- Two short forms, both of which are established names elsewhere.
- It belongs to a living naming tradition with rules that can be described.
- Ameesha and Amissa are both in use, so the spelling will need giving.
- The meanings printed for it do not agree with each other, so there is no single answer.
- Misha, the obvious short form, is a man's name in Russian and will be read that way by some.
