The story of Roseanne
Rose-compounds are old in the Romance languages: Rosanna, Rosalia, Rosalinda, Rosamaria, Roseanne. Rosanna appears in Italian use from the Renaissance, and French produced Roseanne and Rose-Anne. English-speaking countries took them up in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. American use peaked around 1950, in the same period as Roseann, Rosanne and Roseanna. Its most visible modern bearer is Roseanne Barr, whose sitcom ran from 1988 to 1997, and the association is strong enough that the name has been rare since.

Rose, joined to grace
Rose is generally taken from the flower, from Latin rosa, though a Germanic element hros, horse, or hrod, fame, may lie behind the medieval name Rohese that fed into it — the two have merged. Anne is from Hebrew Ḥannāh, grace or favor, which is settled. The compound has no meaning beyond the two names joined.

The Maxie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Roseanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maxie climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maxie's path sketches the road Roseanne is walking now.
Roseanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
