Rhiley
Feminine · “valiant' from the Irish”
Rhiley is given to both — 921 girls and 285 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Rhiley borrows a digraph that English uses in only about a dozen words, almost all of them Greek or Welsh. Rh- signals a voiceless r that neither modern English nor modern Greek actually pronounces — it is a fossil of ancient orthography, kept in rhythm, rhetoric, Rhys and Rhiannon. Applied to Riley it does nothing audible at all. Its peak is 2016.

The story of Rhiley
The rh spelling comes from Greek, where an initial rho carried a rough breathing mark indicating an aspirated or voiceless r; Latin transliterated it as rh and English inherited the convention in words like rhythm, rhinoceros and rhapsody. Welsh has its own genuine rh, which is a real and distinct sound still pronounced in Welsh — Rhys, Rhiannon, Rhondda. English speakers meeting the digraph read it as a plain r and take it as a marker of ancient or Celtic origin. American naming has borrowed it for exactly that signal, producing Rhiley, Rhyan and Rhett-adjacent spellings, none of which has any Greek or Welsh in it.

'valiant' from the Irish; or 'rye clearing' from the English
The name underneath is Riley, which has two genuine and competing sources: the Irish surname O Raghallaigh, from a root associated with valor, and the English place name Ryley, from ryge and leah — a clearing where rye was grown. Both are real and both emigrated to America in numbers. The Rh- spelling belongs to neither tradition and is an American addition.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jenaya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rhiley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenaya climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenaya's path sketches the road Rhiley is walking now.

The trade-off
- The sound is thoroughly familiar and nobody has to be taught it.
- The Rh- spelling is rare enough that a bearer is unlikely to share it.
- Lee and Riles are both usable short forms.
- The silent h will be dropped by essentially everyone writing from dictation.
- At least five spellings share this sound and hers will rarely be guessed.
- The Rh- reads as a deliberate respelling to people who know the Welsh and Greek conventions.
