Rheagan
Feminine · “little king”
Every English word beginning rh is Greek. Rhythm, rhetoric, rhinoceros, rhododendron, Rhea. Greek had a breathed r at the start of a word, marked with a little hook above the letter, and Latin wrote it rh — so the h is a two-thousand-year-old note about how to breathe.

Where it comes from
From ri to Rheagan
The story of Rheagan
Greek marked an initial rho with a rough breathing, a small hook that told the reader to aspirate it, and Latin transcribers wrote that combination as rh. Every rh word English has came in that way: rhapsody, rhombus, rheumatic, rhetoric, Rhodes. The convention is so consistent that a word beginning rh can be assumed Greek without checking. Which makes this spelling a curiosity: an Irish family name, one of the oldest hereditary surnames in Europe, wearing a Greek breathing mark that Irish never had and that does nothing at all in English. It is decoration borrowed from a system that meant something.

little king
From the Irish surname O Riagain, whose root is usually read as ri, a king, with a diminutive ending. The rh at the front is a Greek spelling convention and has nothing to do with the Irish name; it was borrowed for its appearance.

The Leonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rheagan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leonda climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leonda's path sketches the road Rheagan is walking now.
Rheagan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables that everyone reads correctly on sight.
- A documented Irish surname with a traceable family behind it.
- Two short forms, both of which are names in their own right.
- At least four spellings share this sound and Reagan is much commoner than any of them.
- The rh is a Greek convention on an Irish name and does nothing you can hear.
- It is an American presidential surname, and that association is fixed.
