The story of Renae
René and Renée were given in France from the Middle Ages onward with a specific religious sense — the second birth of baptism. The names crossed to America with French settlement and again through general fashion in the twentieth century, when Renee became widely used with the accents dropped. Renae is the phonetic respelling of that, made so that the final syllable cannot be read as an English -ee, and it belongs to the same mid-century American habit that produced Janae and Denae.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Renae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donald climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donald's path sketches the road Renae is walking now.

- The French Renée takes an accent that American systems will not carry anyway.
