Where it comes from

The story of Reema

The gazelle is one of the recurring figures of pre-Islamic and classical Arabic verse, and a small group of women's names — Rim, Reema, Ghazal — come directly out of that imagery. The name is used across the Arabian peninsula, the Levant and North Africa, and it is written Rim, Reem, Reema and Rima depending on which convention the family follows. The doubled e is the spelling most used in South Asia and in English-speaking countries.

Meaning

white antelope, gazelle

From Arabic rim, the white oryx or gazelle; classical Arabic poetry uses the animal's eyes and movement as a fixed image of beauty.

Reema sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2018, with 63 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Reema went to 50 girls in 2025, but Rema is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 57, which makes it the 903rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,264 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 28,198 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 32,145 for Reema itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A concrete meaning — a specific animal — with a documented life in classical poetry.
  • Five letters and two syllables, read correctly by English speakers at first sight.
  • Very widely used across the Arab world, so it has a large community behind it.
What to consider
  • Reem, Rim and Rima are the same name, and different branches of a family may prefer different ones.
  • It is close to Rhea, Rita and Reena in an American ear.
  • The final vowel is dropped in some Arabic usage, so relatives may call her Reem.
