Our story of Rayon
The first manufactured fiber was made from cellulose in the 1880s and sold for forty years as artificial silk, a name the manufacturers came to hate because it made the product sound like a substitute. In 1924 an American trade body ran a search for a replacement and adopted rayon, which had been proposed a decade earlier and which was explained afterwards as evoking a ray of light on a shiny fabric. It was chosen because it sounded right and meant nothing, which is the ideal specification for a trade name. Words invented that way behave oddly afterwards: they have no etymology to consult, they carry whatever the product carries, and if the product becomes ordinary the word becomes ordinary with it. Used as a personal name it is at one further remove again.

The Harvin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rayon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Harvin climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Harvin's path sketches the road Rayon is walking now.
Rayon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
