The story of Raymone
Ramon Llull, born in Majorca around 1232, spent his life trying to convert Muslims by argument rather than by force, learned Arabic for the purpose, and designed a system he called the Art: sets of concentric paper wheels lettered with basic concepts, which could be rotated to generate every possible combination of them. He believed the combinations would exhaust the truths available to reason. Leibniz read him closely, and modern accounts of combinatorics and of mechanical reasoning routinely start with him. He wrote in Catalan when almost nobody wrote philosophy in a vernacular, and he is one of the founders of that literature. The name itself is Germanic, built from words for counsel and protection, and reached Spain with the Visigoths and the Franks.
