The story of Ramey
Ramsons still grow in English woodland in such quantity that the smell arrives before the sight of them, and Anglo-Saxon place-naming recorded the fact: Ramsey in Huntingdonshire and Ramsey on the Isle of Man both appear to contain the word, joined to eg, which meant an island or a patch of dry ground in the fens. That is the ordinary logic of English place names: they describe what was there, in the plainest possible terms, using a vocabulary of plants, animals, water and terrain that later speakers stopped recognizing. The surname came from the places and traveled to America, where Ramey is one of its spellings. The plant is still eaten, and its English name has outlived the language that coined it.

Old English hramsa and eg, garlic island
Ramey is most plausibly a variant of Ramsey, from Old English hramsa, wild garlic, and eg, an island or dry ground in marsh. A separate derivation from Old French ramee, a leafy bough, is also possible. The American peak is 1976.
