Our story of Rainie
The -ie ending in mid-century American naming was doing something that is easy to miss now: it made a name sound approachable rather than formal, and it did so for a generation of women whose mothers had been given very formal names. Regina, Lorraine, Wilhelmina and Josephine gave Reggie, Rainie, Willie and Josie, and the short forms were increasingly registered rather than kept for the house. Rainie's 1958 peak sits at the end of that period; from the 1960s onward American naming moved toward names that were short to begin with, and the diminutive of a long formal name stopped being a common route. The weather reading is available and, on the dates, probably later than the name itself.

Not established
No source establishes an etymology. Three readings circulate: the English weather word with a diminutive ending; a familiar form of Regina, from Latin regina, queen, which is settled for that name; and a clipping of Lorraine, from the French region, itself named for a Frankish king. None is documented for this spelling. Rainie is not recorded outside American use.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
