The story of Raegen
Fixed hereditary surnames were an Irish invention several centuries before England had them, and they were built on a specific ancestor rather than on a place or a job: O Riagain means the descendants of a man called Riagan, and the family could name him. That system produced a very large stock of names that later traveled with emigration, lost their prefixes in English mouths, and became American given names — first for boys, then, from the 1990s, largely for girls. Reagan crossed that line quickly and the respellings arrived immediately behind it. Raegen and Raegan are the same word with the vowel written the other way round.

little king
From Irish O Riagain, descendant of Riagan. The personal name Riagan is usually connected with ri, a king, with a diminutive ending, giving something like little king or impulsive one. The reading is standard but not proven; early Irish personal names are often older than the words used to explain them.

The Adelaine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Raegen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adelaine climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adelaine's path sketches the road Raegen is walking now.
Raegen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and a spelling that most people read correctly on sight.
- A documented Irish family name behind it, traceable to a particular line.
- Rae works as a short form and is a name of its own.
- Reagan, Raegan, Regan and Raygan are all in use and none of these spellings is standard.
- It is an American presidential surname, and that association will come first for many people.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper, which reverses the name's history.
