The story of Adelaine
Adalheid was a tenth-century empress who was canonized, and the whole family of names descends from her name and the ones like it: Adelaide in Germany and England, Adele and Adeline in France, Adela in Spain. Adeline was widely given in nineteenth-century England and America, and the -aine spelling belongs to the same period, when English families were rewriting French endings to look more like English ones. The whole family has been returning for two decades.

The trade-off
- It offers four genuine short forms, each of them a complete name elsewhere.
- The meaning is a single word and belongs to the most productive family in European naming.
- It is long and formal on paper while shortening comfortably.
- Adeline, Adelaine, Adaline and Adalyn are all in use and get written for one another.
- The ending is said two ways, -lain and -leen, and the spelling settles neither.
- Addie is shared with several very well-used names, so the everyday form will not be distinctive.
