So the records fill with Raeann, Ruthann, Maryann, Leeann, Joann, Deeann, Roseann and Jeanann. What makes the group different from the older double names — Mary Ellen, Anna Mae — is that Ann is functioning as a suffix rather than as a second name; nobody is called Raeann and then addressed as Ann.
