Paradise
Feminine · “a walled garden or park”
Paradise is a walled garden. Before it meant heaven it meant an enclosure: Old Persian for a park with a wall round it, borrowed by Greek writers describing Persian estates, then taken by the translators of the Hebrew Bible for the garden in Genesis. The whole religious sense of the word rests on a piece of Persian landscape architecture.

The story of Paradise
The word traveled from Persian into Greek as a piece of ordinary vocabulary: a paradeisos was an aristocrat's walled park, with trees and game inside it. When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated Genesis into Greek they reached for it, and after that the word could never go back to meaning only a garden. Latin took it, then every European language, and English has had it since the Middle Ages. Its use as a given name is recent and American, part of the same movement that made Heaven, Journey and Serenity into names.
Meaning
a walled garden or park
Old Persian pairidaeza, from pairi, around, and daiza, a wall. Greek borrowed it as paradeisos to describe the enclosed hunting parks of the Persian nobility, and the Greek translators of Genesis used it for the garden of Eden, which is how the word acquired its later meaning.

The Kaija test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Paradise's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kaija climbed just as high around 2001, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kaija's path sketches the road Paradise is walking now.
Paradise sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The etymology is one of the most interesting in the language and is easy to tell.
- Everyone can spell it and say it after hearing it once.
- It sits within an established American group of word-names rather than standing alone.
- It is a word in constant everyday use, so the child hears her own name in advertisements and songs.
- Word-names on this scale are read as a statement, and not everyone reads the statement kindly.
- There is no traditional short form, so a family that wants one will be inventing it.
