The name begins as Hebrew Uzziel, borne in the Book of Exodus by a Levite of the house of Kohath. When Jewish translators put those books into Greek in Alexandria, they wrote it Οζιήλ; when Jerome carried it into Latin, it became Oziel, and that Latin spelling is the one that stuck in the Romance languages. From there it settled into Spanish and Portuguese naming as a real, if uncommon, given name — well known to readers of the scriptures, rarely handed to a child. Its American record follows the path of Spanish-speaking families, which is why Texas, California and Arizona carry it most strongly.
