It is two clean beats — LAN-dree — closing on the same bright vowel as Avery and Emery. In Louisiana it is one of the founding Acadian family names, and a whole parish carries it.

The story of Landry
The name behind Landry is the old Germanic Landric — land joined to ric, 'ruler' — which passed into Frankish Gaul as Landericus. Saint Landry, bishop of Paris in the seventh century, fixed the name in French usage, and over the medieval centuries it hardened into a hereditary surname. French settlers carried that surname to Acadia in the 1600s; after the expulsion, Landry families resettled along the Gulf, which is why St. Landry Parish in Louisiana bears it and why the name still runs strongest in Louisiana and Texas. Its return as a first name in America is recent, part of the long move of family surnames into the given-name column.

About 1 boy in 6,544 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,459 for Landry itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Antione test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Landry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Antione climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Antione's path sketches the road Landry is walking now.
Landry sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on first sight for nearly everyone — the spelling gives the sound with no negotiation.
- Works for a girl or a boy without adjustment, since both arrive by the same surname route.
- A documented line stretching back to Frankish Landric and a seventh-century bishop of Paris.
- Already familiar as a family name across the Gulf South, so it lands as a real name rather than an invention.
- Two syllables, ending in the -y sound shared by Avery, Emery and Ellery.
- It sits one consonant away from 'laundry', which is the joke a child will hear at some point and the word autocorrect will occasionally reach for.
- Girls and boys receive it in roughly equal numbers, so nothing about the name signals which; expect forms, teachers and strangers to guess, and to guess wrong about half the time.
- In Louisiana and east Texas it is a widespread surname, so locally it may first register as a last name — including with families who actually bear it.
- Landri, Landrie and Landree all exist, so the spelling will need confirming now and then, though the standard form is the one most people default to.
