Ozella
Feminine
Z was rare in American naming until about 1880 and then a small cluster of z-names appeared in southern records all at once: Zella, Zelma, Zora, Ozella, Ozie. The letter was unusual enough to be the point, and none of the names in the cluster has a source anyone has traced.

Our story of Ozella
Take it apart and everything in it is ordinary. The -ella ending is the oldest working diminutive in Europe, still making small things in Italian and still making names in English. Zella was a real name in the same decades, and Zelma and Zora with it. And the O at the front is the letter English uses when it wants a name to open with a held breath rather than a consonant — the same opening as Olive, Ophelia, Odessa and Ora, all of which were being given in the same years and the same places. What that leaves is a name assembled by ear out of the sounds a particular time and region liked, which is exactly how names were made before anyone thought to write down where they came from. The difference is only that this one happened recently enough that we can see there is no answer, instead of assuming there must be one.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source has been established. Ozella appears in American records at the end of the nineteenth century with no European or biblical parent, and it does not correspond to a word in any language that has been proposed. The -ella ending is the Latin diminutive; the front is not accounted for.

The trade-off
- Three short forms, one of which is in wide current use.
- Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
- It is genuinely rare, so a child will almost certainly never meet another.
- There is no documented meaning or origin, and the honest answer is that nobody knows.
- Very few people carry it now and almost all of them are old.
- It is close enough to Ozelle, Zella and Osella to be misheard as any of them.
