Where it comes from

The story of Orpha

The Book of Ruth opens with two Moabite widows, Orpah and Ruth, and a mother-in-law telling both to go home; Orpah agrees and Ruth refuses, and the book follows Ruth. Protestant families reading the Old Testament closely took names from every part of it, including this one. Orpha appears in American registers through the nineteenth century and peaked around 1885.

Meaningscholars disagree

nape of the neck

From the Hebrew Orpah, usually connected to oreph, 'nape' or 'back of the neck' — read by commentators as a reference to her turning away. That reading may be a rabbinic gloss on the story rather than a genuine etymology. A connection to a word for a fawn has also been proposed.

Orpha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 192 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Orpha has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented biblical source, and an unusual one — the name is not a common borrowing.
  • Two firm syllables that stand up well against a long surname.
  • It is genuinely rare while being entirely traditional in the registers.
What to consider
  • The proposed meaning is a rabbinic reading rather than a settled etymology.
  • The biblical bearer is the one who turns back, which some families will weigh.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
