Oral has no settled origin, and the English word is probably not it. The name is in the American record from the first year of the count, before the word had much currency outside medicine and law, and every explanation offered for it since is working backwards from the spelling.

Where it comes from

The story of Oral

One man made the name recognizable to every American of a certain age. A Pentecostal preacher from Oklahoma took faith healing onto television in the nineteen-fifties, built one of the first religious broadcasting operations in the country and then a university with his name on it, and was for three decades among the most visible figures in American religious life. He was named after nobody in particular; his parents chose the name, as far as anyone recorded, because they liked it. The name itself was already in the record when he was born and had been for half a century.

No source can be given honestly. Proposals include the English word, a clipping of Orrell or Oren, and a variant of Aurel from the Latin for gold, and none of them can be shown from the record.

Oral sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Oral sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • Four letters, two syllables, and nothing to explain.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
What to consider
  • The English word it shares a spelling with has associations the name does not want.
  • There is no established meaning, and any book that gives one is guessing.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States.
