Oneta
Feminine
Oneta is one of the many short names American families made for themselves at the end of the nineteenth century, and its source cannot be recovered. It is not built on the number one, which is the first thing everybody assumes: the resemblance is an accident of spelling, and the -eta ending it carries was in wide use on names that have nothing numerical about them.
How old is the name Oneta?
Oneta first appears in US birth records in 1893 — 132 years ago. The typical Oneta alive today was born around 1925, making them about 100 years old. About 300 people named Oneta are estimated to be alive in the US today.
When was the name Oneta most popular?

From A fashionable ending in the eighteen nineties to Oneta
Our story of Oneta
The ending is the datable part. In the eighteen nineties American naming had a strong appetite for short women's names ending in a stressed syllable plus a vowel, and produced them in quantity: Aleta, Zeta, Neta, Onita, Loreta and a long tail of others, most of which lasted a generation or two and then went. Some were clippings of Spanish or Italian names, some were built on English fronts, and a good many cannot be assigned either way. What they have in common is the ending, which was doing the work that a fashionable ending always does: making an unfamiliar front sound like a name. Read the ending and you have the decade; read the front and you usually have nothing at all.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established. It may be a clipping of a longer name, a variant of Onita or Juanita, or a home-made formation on a fashionable ending. The English number word is not behind it. Names of this kind entered the record without explanation because nobody at the time thought one was needed, and the honest description is a home-made name from a particular period.
How the name formed
- A fashionable ending in the eighteen nineties
- Applied to fronts that cannot be traced
- Oneta, Onita and Aleta in the same registers
- The family receding within two generations
Pronouncing Oneta
oh-NEE-tuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Some families say oh-NET-uh with a short middle vowel instead, which the spelling permits and which sounds like a different name.

Fashion outlook
Oneta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and immediately sayable once the vowel is established.
- It has a genuine nineteenth-century record rather than a modern reconstruction.
- Neta is a clean short form with a real life in other languages.
- The middle vowel is genuinely unsettled between two readings.
- There is no meaning or origin to give, and the number is not it.
- It is very firmly of its period and has had no revival.
