Where it comes from

Our story of Oneita

The nation it resembles made a choice in the Revolution that split a confederacy six centuries old. The league of five nations had held together by consensus, and when the war came the members could not agree — most sided with the Crown, which had at least tried to hold back settlement, and the Oneida sided with the Americans, sent warriors to Valley Forge and carried corn to the starving army there. The confederacy's central fire was covered for the first time in its history, and the alliance never fully recovered. The Oneida were thanked in treaties and then dispossessed anyway, which is the part of the story that does not get taught.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source. It resembles the Iroquoian nation name, which is spelled with a d and means the people of the standing stone, and it resembles Juanita and Anita. Nothing in the record establishes which, and the t in the middle argues against the first.

Pronouncing Oneita

Oneita sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Oneita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight and contains nothing difficult.
  • It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely familiar.
  • It shortens to a name that stands on its own.
What to consider
  • It will be read as the nation's name, which it is not.
  • Juanita and Anita are both nearby and hers will be heard as one of them.
  • There is no meaning to hand a child.

Nobody names a baby alone.
