Where it comes from

The story of Omie

The killing happened at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The man was arrested, escaped, was recaptured years later and never convicted; the woman was buried in a churchyard that still has her stone. The song appeared soon afterwards and traveled, and it is one of a small number of American murder ballads that can be matched to a documented case, which is what makes it valuable to historians as well as to singers. It has been recorded dozens of times over the last century, usually slowly and in a way that makes the plainness of the words do the work. The name in the title is the pet form the family used.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is a southern American pet form and the full name cannot be recovered with certainty. Naomi is the likeliest parent and the woman in the ballad was christened that; other candidates exist. A shortening that removes the front of a name removes the part that identifies it.

Pronouncing Omie

OH-mee

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a long first vowel, since a single consonant between vowels leaves it long. The name it comes from stresses the middle syllable, so the clipping changes the shape entirely.

Omie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Omie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy for a small child to say and to write.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • A long formal name sits behind it if one is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • The ballad is well known in folk circles and the association is not a cheerful one.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
