Where it comes from

Our story of Olean

Western New York was named in a hurry by surveyors and land companies, and the results include genuine indigenous names, transplanted European ones, classical ones and a handful that were simply made up on the spot. This one is in the last category: a settlement that needed a name, a proprietor who produced one, and a word that had not previously existed in any language. There were oil seeps in the district, which is where the usual explanation comes from. Whether the personal name descends from the town or the two were coined independently from the same pleasant sequence of sounds is exactly the sort of thing the record does not preserve.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The town's name is usually explained as a coinage from the Latin for oil, because of the seeps in the area, though a competing account credits a settler's daughter. As a personal name it may come from the town, may be a clipped Oleander, and may be an American build of the period.

Olean sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Olean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight with nothing difficult in it.
  • It is genuinely rare and has a documented place behind it.
  • The middle stress carries well.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Olene, Colleen or Eileen, which are all close by.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
  • No meaning can be claimed, since the town's own name was invented.
