The story of November
The oldest Roman calendar began the year in March and had ten named months; the two winter months were added later and the numbering never adjusted, which is why four months of the modern year are named for the wrong number. Attempts were made to rename November after emperors and none stuck. Its use as a given name is recent and American and belongs with the small set of month names in the records.
Meaning
the ninth month
From Latin novem, nine; September, October, November and December are the seventh through tenth months of a year that began in March, and when January and February were added at the front the names were left as they were.

The Jalene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. November's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jalene climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jalene's path sketches the road November is walking now.
November sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
- Nova and Ember are both complete names in current use and ready short forms.
- The mismatch between the name and the month's position is genuinely interesting.
- Eight letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
- Naming a child for a month invites a question about whether she was born in it.
- It is a common word and will be read as one rather than as a name at first.
