Norman was an English name before there were Normans in England. It is recorded as a byname for Scandinavian settlers in the north and east well before the conquest, which means that when the Normans arrived they found people already carrying a word that described them. The name's modern difficulty has nothing to do with any of that and dates from a single film.

Where it comes from

The story of Norman

The name had a long, entirely ordinary life. It appears in English records before the conquest, survives as a personal name and a surname through the medieval period, and becomes very common indeed in America in the first third of the twentieth century, where it belonged to a great many perfectly unremarkable men. Then a film released at the start of the nineteen sixties attached a specific character to it, and the association was so complete and so widely known that the name has never recovered. It is one of the clearest cases in the record of a single work of fiction damaging a name: not by making it unfashionable, which happens constantly and reverses, but by supplying a connotation that arrives before the person does. Names ruined this way tend to stay ruined for about three generations, which puts the recovery within sight rather than in progress.

Meaning

north man

Two Old English elements, north and man, used as a byname for a Scandinavian. The reading is not in dispute. What is worth separating is the name from the people: the Normans of Normandy were Scandinavians who had settled in France and adopted French within a few generations, and the English name existed independently, applied to Norse settlers in England who had never been near Normandy at all.

How the name formed

  1. An Old English byname for a Scandinavian
  2. A surname and a personal name through the medieval period
  3. Very widely used in early twentieth-century America
  4. Marked by a single film from the nineteen sixties onwards

Norman sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 55 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Norman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is completely familiar, entirely unambiguous and has never needed spelling out.
  • The meaning is concrete, short and easy to explain to a child.
  • It has an unbroken thousand-year record in English, which almost no comparable name has.
What to consider
  • One film supplied an association that arrives before your child does, and it has not faded.
  • It is strongly of a generation, and that generation is now a distant one.
  • The spelling is on the register for girls as well, in very small numbers.
