Norene
Feminine · “honor”
Norene and Norine differ by the vowel nobody hears. English says -ene and -ine identically at the end of a name, so the two spellings are one name written twice, and both were in ordinary use at the same time. Behind them is Nora, which was cut from two long names at once.

The story of Norene
The -ene and -ine endings were interchangeable in American naming for two generations, and the record shows the same family using both across siblings. Neither is more correct. What they were doing was adding a stressed syllable to a short base, which English needs a suffix for because it has very few one-syllable women's names it is comfortable with. Norene, Doreen, Maureen, Charlene and Pauline are all the same operation performed with slightly different letters.

honor
Latin honor used directly as a name gave Honora and Honoria, which became extremely common in Ireland and produced Nora. The other candidate is Eleanor, whose own origin has never been settled — proposals from Provencal and from Arabic have both been offered and neither convinces. A clipping of two names inherits cleanly from neither, so the honor reading is available rather than guaranteed.

Fashion outlook
Norene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nora is available as a short form and is a complete name with a documented Latin meaning.
- The ending is written the way it is said, with nothing left to convention.
- Two syllables with the stress at the end, which balances a front-stressed surname.
- Noreen is the most common of the three spellings and this will be rewritten as it.
- Since the endings are identical in speech, defending the spelling is a purely visual argument.
- The name belongs firmly to an earlier American century and has not returned.
