Where it comes from

Our story of Nonnie

The Latin nona hora is the ninth hour, counted from dawn, which puts it around three in the afternoon, and it was one of the fixed hours of monastic prayer. Somewhere in the Middle Ages the observance drifted earlier, most likely because the fast before it was easier to break sooner, and the name went with it. By the time the word settled into English, noon meant midday and nothing else, and the ninth hour it is named for is nowhere near it. The same root gives nonagenarian and the nones of the Roman calendar, both of which have kept the number that noon abandoned.

Fashion outlook

Nonnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and instantly understood, which very few names manage on a first hearing.
  • Six letters and two syllables: quick to write and easy to remember.
  • It has a documented history of independent use in the American record.
What to consider
  • It reads as an affectionate form to most people, so formal settings will keep asking what it stands for.
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
