Nonie
Feminine
Nonie may be a number. Roman families ran out of names for daughters and used the ordinals instead: a fifth daughter was Quinta, a sixth Sexta, an eighth Octavia and a ninth Nona, and several of those numbers are still in use as names by people who have no idea they are counting.

Our story of Nonie
The Roman practice was not sentimental. A daughter took the feminine of her father's family name, so every daughter of one house had the same name, and the numbers were how a family told them apart. Nobody thought it cold, because a woman's name was not expected to be personal in the way a man's was. What is odd is what happened next: several of those numbers survived the collapse of the system that made them, crossed into Christian use as saints' names, and are now given to children as though they meant something. Octavia is the commonest, and the family it came from would not recognize a single thing about how it is now used.

The name has at least three possible sources and no way to choose. It may be a pet form of a longer name, of which several fit; it may descend from the Latin ordinal; and it may be an independent American formation. Where a short name can be reached by three routes, the honest answer is that the route cannot be recovered.
How the name formed
- Latin ordinals used as women's names
- Several of them surviving as saints' names
- Pet forms of longer names arriving at the same sound
- Nonie in American records from the earliest years

NOH-nee
Two syllables, stress on the first. Some families say NON-ee with a short first vowel instead, which is closer to the Latin, and both are in genuine use.

Fashion outlook
Nonie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and immediately sayable by anybody.
- Nona is available as a more formal version of the same name.
- It is genuinely uncommon while sounding entirely familiar.
- Two pronunciations are in use and the spelling settles neither.
- No source can be given, because three of them are equally likely.
- It reads as a pet form to most people however it is registered.
Nobody names a baby alone.
