The story of Nolyn
The O Nuallains were lords of Forth in County Carlow and appear in the Irish annals through the medieval period. The surname crossed to America with Irish emigration and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth century, rising sharply in the two-thousands. Respellings followed as they always do: Nolyn, Nolen and Nolin all write the same two syllables, and the y in this one marks it as the most recent of the three.

Irish nuall, a cry, a shout or fame noised abroad, with a diminutive, giving Nuallan. Champion and chariot-fighter are also printed and are less well supported. The surname is documented; the reading of the byname is not settled.

About 1 boy in 58,899 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,899 for Nolyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Collen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nolyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Collen climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Collen's path sketches the road Nolyn is walking now.
Nolyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
