The story of Nolia
Pierre Magnol was a professor at Montpellier who developed one of the first systems of plant families, an idea that outlived his classification. Charles Plumier named a Caribbean tree after him, Linnaeus adopted the name in 1753, and it now covers a genus of some two hundred species, several of which are among the oldest flowering plants on earth: magnolias evolved before bees, and their tough flowers are built for beetles. In the American South the tree became emblematic, and its name became a girl's name, which then clipped in the ordinary way to Nolia and Nola. The whole chain, from a seventeenth-century French professor to a nineteenth-century American girl, runs through a plant that predates the insects that pollinate most other flowers.
