Anglo-American fiction discovered the Spanish southwest in the 1880s and took its names first. A novel published in 1884 about a mission-raised woman in California sold for fifty years, spawned pageants and a tourist industry, and put Spanish women's names into Anglo households that had never met one.

Where it comes from

The story of Nita

Helen Hunt Jackson wrote Ramona to make Americans care about the treatment of California Indians and it worked in every way except the one she intended: readers took it as a romance and came looking for the ranchos. It ran through hundreds of printings, was filmed repeatedly, and made Spanish California into a national fantasy. One of the effects was on naming. Ramona, Juanita, Anita, Bonita and Nita entered Anglo-American use in exactly those decades, well before there was much intermarriage to explain it, carried by fiction rather than by families. The -ita ending they all share is a real Spanish diminutive, and it does the same work as -y in English.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, easy in Spanish, English and Hindi.
  • It is short without being obviously a shortening of any one thing.
  • Three full Spanish names are available behind it if a formal version is wanted.
What to consider
  • People will assume it is short for Juanita or Anita and will ask.
  • The obvious one-syllable clip is an English word for a louse egg.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations and places the name in the last century.
