Ninfa
Feminine · “bride”
Ninfa is the Italian and Spanish word for a nymph, used directly as a name. The Greek behind it did double duty: nymphe meant a spirit of a spring or a wood, and it also meant a bride or a young married woman, and the same word covered both without anyone finding it odd. The bride is the older meaning of the two.

The story of Ninfa
Italian and Spanish naming kept a number of Latin word-names in circulation long after English gave them up, and Ninfa is one — it appears as a Christian name from late antiquity, helped by a martyr of that name venerated in southern Italy. It traveled to the Americas with Italian and Spanish emigration and appears in American records from the early twentieth century, most often in families from those traditions. The word never developed the frivolous associations in Italian and Spanish that it acquired in English, which is why the name survived in one set of languages and not in the other.
Meaning
bride; young woman; nature spirit
Greek nymphe is an ordinary word for a bride or a newly married woman, and it was extended to the female spirits of springs, trees and mountains — probably because they were imagined as perpetually young. Latin took it as nympha with both senses. The bridal sense is why the word turns up in the New Testament and in Greek marriage vocabulary, and it is the one modern English has entirely lost. Nothing about the derivation is argued.

The Willard test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ninfa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Willard climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Willard's path sketches the road Ninfa is walking now.
Ninfa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a real word with a documented double sense, and the older sense is genuinely surprising.
- It is spelled phonetically in Spanish and Italian, so it is said right on first sight there.
- Two syllables with a firm first stress, which sits well against a longer surname.
- In English the related word carries associations that Italian and Spanish do not attach to it, and English-speaking rooms will supply them.
- The name belongs to an earlier American period and reads as of that time.
- Nina will be substituted constantly, in speech and on paper, because it is the more familiar name by far.
