The story of Nile
The Nile's flood built Egypt, and its sources were unknown to Europe until the nineteenth century — Herodotus gave up on the question. The Greeks named it and the name stuck everywhere but Egypt. Nile appears in the American registers as a given name for both sexes and is in current use.

From the Greek Neilos, of unrecovered origin — possibly Semitic nahal, 'river valley'. The Egyptians called it iteru, 'the river', or Hapi for its inundation, never Neilos. A second route for the name is the Irish Niall through Neil. Neither is settled for modern bearers.
