Origin, sound and short forms
The story of Artemis
Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals and childbirth, and her temple at Ephesus was one of the seven wonders. Her name appears on Mycenaean tablets, older than Homer. The name entered modern use for both sexes, helped by a children's series from 2001, and appears in American records in current use.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The origin of Artemis is genuinely unrecovered. Proposals include the Greek artemes, 'safe' or 'unharmed', and a pre-Greek Anatolian source. Her name appears in Linear B, which puts it before Greek as we know it. Honest sources say the meaning is unknown.

The Kainoa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Artemis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kainoa climbed just as high around 2005, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kainoa's path sketches the road Artemis is walking now.
Artemis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
