Where it comes from

The story of Nikkolas

Nike was the winged goddess of victory, and her name was one of the most productive elements in Greek naming: Nikolaos, victory of the people, Nikodemos, the same with a different word for people, Nikephoros, victory-bearer, and the Macedonian Pherenike, which became Berenice in Greek and then Veronica in Latin, so that a name now firmly attached to a Christian legend began as a Ptolemaic queen's. The word itself survived in ordinary Greek for victory and was borrowed in 1971 by an Oregon shoe company that had been called Blue Ribbon Sports. Nicholas as a personal name owes its spread to the bishop of Myra, and its extraordinary popularity across Russia, Greece, Italy and northern Europe to his cult rather than to the etymology.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
